JnU students announce fresh programmes

FE Report | Tuesday, 25 February 2014

The demonstrating students and teachers of the Jagannath University (JnU) announced on Monday fresh three-day programmes to realise their demands including recovery of the university's dormitory, which is allegedly occupied by incumbent parliament member Haji Selim.
The programmes include collection of mass signatures and demonstration on Tuesday and Wednesday, and submission of memorandum to the education ministry Thursday.
Earlier, they blocked the road in front of the National Press Club for around two hours from 11:30pm that created massive tailback in the link roads including Shahabag, Matsho Bhaban, High Court, Bangabazar, Gulistan, Paltan and Motijheel.
JnU Teachers Association (JnUTA) also expressed its solidarity with the ongoing protest of the students terming it legitimate and rational. They also formed a human chain on the university campus and demanded exemplary punishment to the police personnel responsible for Sunday's attack on students.
Condemning the police attack, the JnUTA President Ali Akkas said that they won't go back until their demands are realised. He said police attacked peaceful demonstration of the students.
Campus sources said that like the previous day, the enraged students started gathering on the university campus from early Monday and staged demonstration to realise their demands.
Later on, hundreds of students wearing black badges took to the streets around 11:00am Monday and started the demonstration programme in front of the National Press Club.  They were chanting slogans against the illegal occupation of their dormitory and removal of the DC, police
The clash erupted Sunday when the demonstrating students were trying to move towards the occupied hall around 11:15am. The law enforcers charged baton, fired tear gas shells and rubber bullets to disperse the students.
Following the police attack the protesting teachers and students Sunday gave a 24-hour ultimatum to withdraw Officer in Charge (OC) of Katowali Mohammad Moniruzzaman and Lalbag DC Harun-or-Rashid for their alleged involvement in the attack leaving at least 20 students injured.
The students have been demonstrating since February 12, demanding recovery of their 11 dormitories, including Tibbat Hall, in different parts of Old Dhaka from illegal occupation.
