Join Parliament session, raise demands in House

Monday, 7 September 2009

Speaker Abdul Hamid Advocate has requested the opposition to join Parliament session and raise their demands on the floor of the House, which sits today (Monday).
The Speaker made the call in reply to a question from journalists at the closing ceremony of 'Bangladesh Parliament Orientation Programme' at Bangabandhu International Convention Centre in the city Sunday, reports UNB.
"There is no alternative to ensuring participation of all members to make the parliament effective", he said, against the backdrop of the main opposition BNP boycott of the last session, which was the maiden budget session of the ninth parliament.
The Parliament goes into its third session today (Monday) at 11am, but the recalcitrant opposition BNP lawmakers are yet to decide about their joining the session.
They were on the boycott following a row over sitting arrangement in the House-they want more front-row seats.
The week-long orientation programme for women MPs and first-time elected MPs began in the Oath Room of the Jatiya Sangsad on August 30.
It was designed for better orientation of the new members on the Rules of Procedure and Legislative Drafting so the lawmakers could perform in a better way.
Bangladesh Parliament and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) jointly organised the training course.
Chaired by Deputy Speaker Shawkat Ali, the function was addressed, among others, by Whip ASM Firoz, Parliament Secretary Ashfaq Hamid, former MP Abdul Mannan, UNDP Country Director Stefan Priesner, international Parliament expert Patrick Cadle and Project Director and Additional Secretary Pranab Chakrabarty.
Calling upon all MPs to acquire proper knowledge on the constitution, Rules of Procedures and Parliamentary regulations, Speaker Abdul Hamid said the Rules of Procedures is a basic guideline for conducting the parliament proficiently.
"The main job of the Parliament is to enact laws. So, the members should groom themselves as skilled ones and ensure transparency and accountability in every work for enacting good laws", he emphasised.
