Journalist Atiqul Alam laid to rest

Noted journalist Atiqul Alam was laid to rest at Banani Graveyard in Dhaka on Wednesday evening. He was buried besides his daughter after Maghrib prayers at 7:30pm. Atiqul Alam breathed his last at the house of his father-in-law in Bogra Sadar upazila at the age of 81 on July 20, two days after Holy Eid-ul-Fitr. The deceased’s only son Shawkat Shamim, younger brother Colonel (retd) Nazmul Alam and daughter-in-law and also Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST)’s former vice-chancellor Dr Moslem Uddin, among others, were present during the burial of the senior journalist. Atiqul Alam started his career at Eastern Examiner in Chittagong. Later, he joined The Daily Unity. He successfully carried out responsibilities of Dhaka bureau chief of The Pakistan Times before the country’s independence struggles began in 1971. After the liberation, Atiqul Alam became the founder bureau chief of Reuters in Dhaka and also worked as Dhaka bureau chief of BBC. He was also the editor of Arthaniti Pratidin – Dhaka-based Bangla daily newspaper, according to a news agency.
