Journalists have decided to hold demonstrations across the country on February 22 to press their demand for arresting those responsible for killing journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi, reports bdnews24.com.
As part of the demonstration, the media persons would also demand proper investigation in all cases of torture and murder of journalists, trial of the perpetuators, and ensuring an atmosphere to carry out independent journalism.
The announcement came after a joint meeting of Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ), two factions of Awami League and BNP-backed journalists of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ), alongside several journalists' organistions, including Jatiya Press Club and Dhaka Reporters' Unity (DRU).
The meeting was held at the Jatiya Press Club Saturday.
"The (protest) programme will be held in front of Jatiya Press Club around 11:00 am," BFUJ president Ruhul Amin Gazi told reporters at a media briefing at Jatiya Press Club.
Local unions of journalists and other organisations, including the local Press Clubs, will also stage similar programmes across the country on February 22, he said.
The BFUJ president also warned that holding of further programmes would be declared that day unless the killers of Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Nahar Runi are arrested by then.
BFUJ President Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, Press Club President Kamal Uddin Sabuj and DRU President Shakhawat Hossain Badshah were among those present at Saturday's meeting.
