Joypurhat markets keep receiving seasonal potato

JOYPURHAT, Dec 5: Joyputhat district has gained popularity as a big vegetable growing district. Seasonal potato growing is going on in full and it has already begun to enter the city and village markets.
Joypurhat DAE sources said that this year potato cultivation target area is about 37,517 hectarers of land which will be harvested in February next year. The DAE sources said that every year the farmers of the district gain profit from seasonal potato. This year about 2 thousands hectarers of land has been brought under potato cultivation and harvesting has begun a week ago.
Farmers of the early potato are getting more benefit out of their crop. This type of potato does not grow in any area but only on soft and fertile land like in areas of Panchbibi Upazila.
Now the seasonal red potato is being sold at taka 40 to 48 per kg. Whereas a week ago it sold at taka 100 per kg. Gradually its price is reducing. The cardinal potato is being sold at the same rate in the local market when the old potato is being sold at taka 24 and Granola is being sold at taka 15 per kg.
Being a good weather the seasonal potato is being produced in per bigha 30 to 35 mounds earns about 40 thousands taka when the farmer's production cost is only 12 to 15 thosands taka only.
Tazul Islam a farmer of Rukindipur village under Akkelpur Upazila said to the correspondent that he cultivated only 1bigha of land potato and good weather has helped to grow it for good production. He began to sale it from last week with the price of 45 taka per kg. He hopped that about 20 thousands taka will be earned from this land if the price rate does not fail in short time. He expressed that this type of potato cultivation is more benefited than the original seasoned potato.
