Joypurhat Sugar Mills begins production

JOYPURHAT, Nov 25: Joypurhat Sugar Mills begun its sugar production of the current 2010-2011 season Thursday.
According to mill sources, this year 11 thousand hectares of land have brought under the sugarcane cultivation in the mill area. Last year it was 8 thousand hectares of land. From these land 0.1 million tons cane will be crashed and production target has set up for sugar is 7 thousand and 5 hundred tons where the recovery target is 7 per cent. The mill will continue its production by 60 days from its starting where last season it was only 33 days. In last season this mill produced 3,890 tons sugar by crashing 53,742 tons sugarcane. That time the mill faced 140 million Tk loss.
A total of 48 crashing seasons passed the mill and from 32 seasons the mill counted loss of Tk 640 million. Presently this mill is carrying Tk 550 million of bank loan.
Abaidul Haque, a farmer of Dhalaher UP said that he is very happy for raising the sugarcane price and direct cash subsidy. He expressed positively that next year he will cultivate sugarcane at a large scale
Like this farmer most of the farmers of the mill area expressed the same idea that in previous they were not be benefited by cultivating this crop because of low price of sugarcane and bad management of the mill but now its cultivation is profitable, next year they will increase the cultivation.
M Mofakkharul Islam, Managing Director of the mill told the FE that authority has raised the sugarcane price. Now the sugarcane is being sold at 88.95 while last year it was Tk 67.40. Beside this, a cash subsidy will be given among the farmers so next year its cultivation and production target will be exceeded.
