KHULNA, July 8 (UNB): Jatiya Party (JP) president HM Ershad Tuesday said Jatiya Party would form the government after winning the parliamentary election scheduled for December this year.
"This is the last chance for Jatiya Party to go to state power. This opportunity must not be lost and our party would have to occupy the seat of power," Ershad stated this while speaking at the Khulna divisional conference of Jatiya Party at the Zia Hall in Khulna Tuesday.
Addressing the conference as chief guest, the former president said he could not go to the doors of people with the vote appeal for the party during the three previous caretaker governments as "I was harassed" by false cases.
"But now I am a free bird. I'll go to the doors of people with vote appeals in the upcoming national poll and want to prove that Jatiya Party is the biggest party in the country," he said.
Ershad said those who had kept him behind the bar by filing false cases are now in prison on charges of corruption. "Almighty Allah and the nation will never pardon them. Their time is up and the people will reject them in the next national election."
Referring to the general polls in 1970 and 1978 held under the state of emergency, the former army chief said there is no bar to hold national elections under the state of emergency.
Jatiya Party acting president Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud, general secretary Ruhul Amin Hawlader, presidium members Kazi Jafar Ahmed and Golam Reza also spoke on the occasion.
