JP to take part in local body polls, resist opponents: Ershad

RANGPUR, June 22 (UNB): Jatiya Party (JP) Chairman HM Ershad today said his party would contest the local body elections and warned that anyone trying to oppose the polls would be resisted by the people.
Addressing the Rajshahi divisional conference of JP at Town Hall here he directed the party leaders and activists to prepare for contesting the August 4 elections to four city corporations and nine municipalities.
Referring to BNP led four-party alliance decision to stay out of the fracas Ershad warned that anyone trying to frustrate the elections would face resistance from the people.
The former President warned the government against discriminatory behaviour to politicians saying, "if continued, this may lead to a perilous situation."
He said 1/11 change over had raised aspirations of the people. But that had largely waned now because of discrimination in application of law.
Ershad was highly critical of BNP. "The four-party alliance government had no contribution to the nation.
