JS adopts obituary reference to noted personalities

The second session of the 9th parliament on the first day sitting Thursday adopted obituary references on the death of 15 noted personalities including member of the 9th parliament Mamtaz Iqbal, eminent nuclear scientist Dr MA Wazed Miah, a former minister, MPs and national and foreign dignitaries, reports BSS from Sangsad Bhaban Thursday.
Earlier, Speaker Advocate Abdul Hamid moved the obituary references separately with brief resumes of those who died since prorogation of the 1st session of the current parliament.
As part of the obituary references, the speaker recalled with deep respect the memories of former president of India Sree R Vengkataraman and former minister Sunil Gupta.
Other noted personalities who were mourned by the JS included former lawmakers Mohammad Khorshed Alam, Maj Gen (retd) Khalilur Rahman, Advocate Mohammad Altaf Hossain, Advocate Khondokar Nurul Islam, Anwar-ul-Islam and Shahjahan Yar Chowdhury; former member of National Assembly Advocate Dewan Abul Abbas, former additional secretary of the Parliament Secretariat Khondokar Abdul Haque Mia, eminent politician Golam Rabbani, and computer engineer Mohammad Nazmul Hossain and Khondokar Tareq Aziz, who were killed in Pilkhana incident.
5-member panel of chairmen nominated
At the outset of the first sitting of the second session of the 9th Jatiya Sangsad Thursday, Speaker Advocate Abdul Hamid nominated a 5-member panel of chairmen to preside over the sessions in the absence of the speaker and the deputy speaker in the House.
The members are: Advocate Abdul Matin Khasru, HN Ashiqur Rahman, Ruhul Amin Hawladar, Mohammad Hafizur Rahman and Prof Jinnatunnesa Talukder.
They will preside over the session as per the numerical order.
Budget session adjourned till June 7
The second session of the 9th parliament, better known as budget session, adjourned Thursday until 4:00 pm on June 7, reports bdnews24.com.
Speaker Advocate Abdul Hamid adjourned the session at 4:05 pm, after it began just before 3:30 pm amid boycott by the main opposition party BNP.
Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith is expected to present the budget for 2009-10 fiscal in parliament on June 11.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and other MPs were present.
Earlier, Awami League held its parliamentary party meeting at the parliament building at 2:30 pm, presided over by Sheikh Hasina.
Speaker Advocate Abdul Hamid in Wednesday's meeting of the business advisory committee, the highest policymaking parliamentary forum, said the current session would continue to July 9.
Speaker hopes for constructive role
Speaker Advocate Abdul Hamid Thursday expressed his firm optimism that both the treasury and opposition bench members would play their respective constructive roles in making the House a real platform for all national activities including formulation of a fiscal plan for the coming year to free Bangladesh from poverty and hunger, reports BSS.
In his inaugural speech in the first sitting of the second session of the 9th Parliament, the Speaker said: "In the parliamentary democracy, the House is the forum for all national activities, and both the treasury and opposition bench members have to work together to make the parliament effective." "It is the first budget session of the parliament constituted through a free, fair and neutral election on December 29, 2008. The winning party has given some specific commitments to the people before that election for their welfare," the Speaker said.
He described budget as an important medium to implement the electoral commitments and expressed the hope that the upcoming fiscal document would be an important one to check price spiral, face global meltdown, combat corruption, achieve economic stability, reduce poverty and establish good governance in the country.
