JS budget session begins
Thursday, 3 June 2010
The budget sitting of the fifth session of the 9th Jatiya Sangsad began at 5:10 pm Wednesday with Speaker Mohammad Abdul Hamid in the chair, reports BSS.
The proceedings of the House started with recitation from the Holy Quran.
The current budget session would continue until July 20 with resumption of the session everyday at 4 pm.
Besides, general discussion on the budget would be held for 40 working hours during the period. However, the Speaker may extend or reduce this time, if necessary.
These were decided at a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee of the 9th parliament held Wednesday at the Sangsad Bhaban with the Speaker in the chair.
Meanwhile, main opposition BNP returned to the parliament session at 7:35pm after it had walked out in protest on Wednesday even before the budget session got down to business.
BNP's Moudud Ahmed had stood up for a point of order as the Speaker was giving floor to the Prime Minister for taking questions for the first 30 minutes of the opening day.
The Speaker promised the BNP leader floor provided the opposition MPs listened to the Prime Minister first, saying :"This is not the right time."
"There is no scope in the Rules of Procedure to give point of order during the question-answer hour," he explained.
After the Speaker's ruling, Moudud silently led the BNP MPs out, mainly to avoid the Prime Minister's question-answer hour, the BNP insiders said.
"You are not abiding by the Rules of Procedure. This is really unfortunate," said the Speaker.
Earlier, Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury MP, who sits on the policymaking standing committee, told bdnews24.com they will join the key proceedings.
