JS probe unveils massive corruption of Mainul, his family

A Jatiyo Sangsad (JS) probe body unveiled "massive corruption" in the Works Ministry during the past alliance and caretaker regimes, singling out ex-Adviser Barrister Mainul Hosein and his family members for allegedly allocating and occupying plots through misuse of power, reports UNB.
The five-member sub-committee published its findings Monday, saying that the parliamentarians came to the conclusions after probing allegations from individuals and documents from the ministries concerned.
The sub-committee, headed by Nasrul Hamid MP, was formed to investigate the allegations of corruption and irregularities under the stewardship of the former Housing and Public Works Adviser of the military-backed interim regime, Barrister Mainul, as well as under the past BNP-led coalition government.
Briefing journalists at the JS Media Centre the sub-committee convenor said they received a lot of documents and letters of allegations of "corruption and misuse of power" by the former adviser and his family members.
Citing an example, Nasrul Hamid said Arshad Hosein, son of Mainul Hosein, has forcibly occupied a flat at Gulshan-1 in the city. The owner of that house submitted the complaint to the sub-committee.
Arsahd allegedly misused his father's power in running his personal business. "He runs an advertising firm named 'Matra' at that Gulshan apartment defying objection from the house-owner," the sub-committee chief told the reporters.
"Though Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) moved for demolishing the business centre, it had failed due to Arshad's father's influence," he added.
The committee has got evidences that Arshad constructed a high-rise tower named 'Musafir' in the capital's Kakrail area "violating the building code" of RAJUK.
Citing another example of alleged graft, the sub-committee chief said Mainul purchased a flat under "false name" Sazeda Hosein as his wife hiding up the real name, Saju Hosein, from a real-estate company in the city's posh Baridhara area.
Besides, the former adviser of the caretaker government had interfered into allocation of 158 plots under Khulna Development Authority (KDA) to different parties "in blatant violation of the existing rules and regulations."
"The ex-adviser had also misused his authority in allocating 459 plots under Kushtia Housing Authority in Kushtia," the briefing session was told.
Continuing to unravel their findings against Mainul, one of the key figures in the past Fakhruddin administration, the head of the sub-committee further said Mainul also allotted a plot to a private university in the city's Mirpur area "by abusing power."
Nasrul Hamid said the sub-committee were still examining all these 'serious' allegations.
He said 13 construction workers had lost their valuable lives during the demolition of the much-talked-about Rangs Bhaban due to "adventurous decision" of the ex-adviser.
To justify Mainul's wrong decision, the lawmakers on the sub-committee opined that ship-breaking workers were appointed to demolish the high-rise following the orders of the Ministry's chief executive.
Nasrul said they have evidences and minutes of this. "We will recommend taking legal action against Mainul Hosein for his adventurous decision that led to death of 13 poor workers," he said.
