Members of Parliament from both the treasury and opposition benches have paid glowing tributes to former Speaker and former Acting President Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar, praising his lifelong contributions to democracy, the rule of law and parliamentary democracy, report agencies.
Speaking on a condolence motion in the Jatiya Sangsad (JS), lawmakers described Sircar as a distinguished jurist, veteran parliamentarian and steadfast defender of constitutional governance who earned widespread respect across the political spectrum.
Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad said Sircar was a renowned lawyer and a close associate of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia.
Recalling his personal qualities, the Speaker described him as humble, generous and courteous, noting that he had never heard any complaint against him. He also said Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal had visited Sircar on Saturday night, while he himself had planned to visit him in hospital on Sunday morning but was unable to do so following his death.
Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said Sircar was not only a political colleague but also a mentor who treated him with fatherly affection despite having no family ties.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed remembered Sircar as a thorough gentleman and a dedicated political activist, saying his trademark three-piece suit, hat and umbrella had become synonymous with his public persona.
Leader of the Opposition Dr Shafiqur Rahman paid tribute to Sircar's distinguished public career, highlighting his service as a six-time Member of Parliament, former Speaker, former Acting President and eminent jurist.
Lawmakers from the BNP, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and the National Citizen Party (NCP) also joined the discussion, reflecting the broad cross-party respect Barrister Sircar commanded throughout his political life.
