JOYPURHAT, Jan 27: Joypurhat Sugar Mill (JSM) was closed down with a loss of Tk 120 million (12 core) in the current season, because of inadequate supply of sugarcane.
The sugar mill began its production on December 18 last and it was closed down on January 21.
In the current season, the production target of sugar was 4,320 tonnes by crushing 60,000 tonnes of sugarcane, where the recovery target was 7.2 per cent.
But, the mill was in operation for only 33 days instead of 60 days, and it produced 3,870 tonnes sugar by crushing 53,742 tonnes of sugarcane. The recovery rate was only 7.00 per cent.
At present, the stock of sugar is about 3,000 tonnes in the mill. The government fixed its retail price at Tk 45 per kg.
Dues of its cultivators and employees are Tk 35 million (3.50 core) in this season.
Due to low sugarcane price than other agricultural products, the mill is incurring a loss day by day.
JSM Managing Director Mofakkarul Islam said, the government should increase the price of sugarcane in the next season so that farmers were interested in cultivating sugarcane and the mill was expected to make profit in the upcoming season, he said.
