JU female students protest strict rule

JU Correspondent | Friday, 12 December 2014

The female students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) protested harassment in halls and the strict rule of returning to dormitories within 10:00 pm imposed by the university authorities.
On Wednesday around 11:00 am, over three hundred female students from different dormitories brought out a protest procession on the campus. Later, a protest rally was also held there.
In the rally different cultural groups of JU expressed solidarity with their demand. During the programme, students chanted slogans against the strict rule of returning to female dormitories and harassment by the hall authorities.
They issued a 12-hour ultimatum to the authorities to withdraw the restriction.
Shahinur Akhter Preeti, a student of the university, alleged that assistant proctor Nigar Sultana seized her ID card since she failed to return to her hall before 10:00 pm as she joined a workshop.
Chaity, an agitating student, said if the authorities do not meet their demand, they would declare tougher movement to force them to do so.
She also alleged that the hall authorities approach students in the same manner as law enforcers behave with criminals.
Proctor of the university Prof Tapan Kumar Saha said, "The rule is not new; it was promulgated previously."
No conscious person, especially a guardian, expects that his/her child may be allowed to stay outside the hall after 10:00 pm, he added.
JU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Farzana Islam said, "The hall authority has taken the decision considering the security of the female students."
