JU files case over Shamim’s death

Eight students accused, one held

The Jahangirnagar University (JU) authorities have filed a murder case against eight students after the death of Shamim Ahmed alias Shamim Molla, a former leader of the university's Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) unit.
Shamim Molla died after a group of students beat him on the campus on September 18.
The university's chief security officer, Sudipto Shaheen, lodged a complaint at the Ashulia police station on September 19, naming eight students and accusing 20-25 unidentified others.
Based on the complaint, a murder case has been filed, and one suspect has been arrested.
According to the police, a local youth, Habibur Rahman, 24, has been detained for questioning. He was former president of the Dhamrai Government College Chhatra League unit.
The eight accused include Zubair Ahmed from the 44th batch of the History Department; Raju Ahmed from the 45th batch of the Government and Politics Department; Mohammad Rajan Mia from the 46th batch; Sohag Mia from the 47th batch of the Computer Science and Engineering Department; Atikuzzaman Atiq from the 49th batch of the Management Studies Department; Ahsan Labib from the 49th batch of the Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering Department; Hamidullah Salman from the 49th batch of the English Department; and Mahmudul Hasan Raihan from the 50th batch.
On Thursday, the JU authorities suspended them on charge of killing Shamim in a mob-lynch attack. Additionally, a five-member inquiry committee was formed to investigate the death. The committee will submit a report with recommendations within 30 days.
