JU human chain presses for July Charter, referendum verdict implementation

JU CORRESPONDENT | Friday, 10 April 2026

Students under the banner of Jatiya Chhatra Shakti Jahangirnagar University unit formed a human chain on the campus on Thursday demanding proper implementation of the referendum verdict and enforcement of the July Charter. The programme was held around 1:00 pm at the base of the university's Central Shaheed Minar.
During the demonstration, participants chanted slogans such as "Respect the people's verdict of the referendum," "Implement the July Charter," "No delay in enforcing the July Charter," and "Form a reform council instead of mere amendments."
General Secretary of the JU unit of Jatiya Chhatra Shakti, Nadia Rahman Annesha, said, "Out of 20 ordinances, four have been repealed while 16 have been suspended for further discussion, raising concerns over the government's independence in decision-making."
"We believe such decisions reflect the influence of certain establishments. If the government truly holds legitimacy, it must honour the mandate given by 70 per cent of the people," she added.
Zia Uddin Ayan said, "Although the BNP had long struggled for democracy, it has deviated from those ideals after assuming power and is failing to meet public expectations. The delay in implementing the July Charter and the silence in parliament reflect a disregard for the people's verdict."
"The government is retreating from its own declared commitments and reform agenda, which amounts to a betrayal of the people. Students would be compelled to take to the streets again if the people's mandate and democratic rights continue to be ignored," he added.
Meanwhile, Sadiq Munawar Munem, a student of the International Relations Department of Dhaka University and an executive member of the Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall parliament, has been continuing a hunger strike, demanding the implementation of the "July Charter" and referendum verdict, along with the enactment of key ordinances in Parliament, including measures to prevent enforced disappearances.
