A researcher at Jahangirnagar University (JU) has invented a kind of environment-friendly polythene, which is perishable in soil, reports BSS.
Prof SM Wahiduzzaman invented the polythene during the course of his PhD research in the Department of Chemistry under the supervision of Prof Dr Sharif Enamul Kabir, who is also vice-chancellor of the university, a JU press statement Thursday.
A recent meeting of the JU syndicate conferred PhD degree on Prof Wahiduzzaman for his thesis 'Preparation and Characterisation of Bioblend of Naturally Occurring Polymers and Water Soluble Polymers by Using Radiation Techniques'.
He said polymer product prepared from the mixture of rice starch, rice bran, potato, arrowroot, ziga (tree) gum, PVA, urea, sugar and soyabean could be used for packaging after improving its quality through gamma emission.
This newly invented polythene is perishable in soil and can work as a slow-pace fertiliser. It is cost-effective and environment-friendly.
