Thursday, 22 May 2014

A student of Jahangirnagar University (JU) has died after being run over by a pick-up van near her campus. The wayward vehicle left two others injured at around 5:00pm on Wednesday. Hundreds of JU students blocked Dhaka-Aricha highway in protest, and vandalised and set fire to stranded cars. Fatema Khatun, an anthropology student from Pabna’s Ataikula Upazila, was a resident of the JU’s Pritilota Hall. She was standing opposite to her campus, in front of the Dairy Farm’s gate, to catch a bus to Dhaka, said the university’s Assistant Proctor Julkar Nain quoting witnesses. “The driver of the pick up lost control and ran over the people waiting next to the highway. Fatema died on the spot,” he said. The injured, identified as Nurul Islam and Rehana Akhter, have been admitted to a private clinic in Savar. About the students who blocked the busy highway, he said, “We are trying to calm them down.” The driver and the vehicle were held from C&B area, a kilometer from the site, said Ashulia Police OC Badrul Islam, according to bdnews24.com.
