JU suspends 16 BCL men over attack on rival group

The authority of Jahangirnagar University (JU) has suspended a total of 16 Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) men of the campus unit in connection with an attack on another group on the campus.
The decision came from an emergency syndicate meeting held at the Registrar Bhaban Friday morning.
Md Hanif Ali, a university syndicate member, said the decision was
taken following the recommendation of the disciplinary committee at an
emergency syndicate meeting.
The suspended BCL men include Moulana Bhasani Hall unit general secretary Anindo Baroi of Anthropology department who led the attack, K M Nurunnabi of Genetics Engineering department, Rajon and Sujan of Physics department, Bijoy of Chemistry department, Kishor and Nayem of Marketing department, Shonjoy of Anthropology department.
All of them are residents of Moulana Bhashani Hall.
Chaired by JU Vice-chancellor (VC) Prof Farzana Islam, the hall provost, the proctor and the registrar, among others, were present at the meetings.
Meanwhile, a five-member probe body headed by Prof Rasheda Akhter of
Anthropology department has been formed to investigate the incident within seven working days.
"The decision of suspension has been taken primarily and soon after getting the probe report further decision will be taken", JU Proctor Tapan
Kumar Shaha said.
"During the suspension the suspended students would not be allowed on
the dormitory and campus and will also not be able to participate in any academic activities at the university," he added.
On Wednesday around 4:00 am a group of BCL men suddenly attacked another, who were asleep, injuring at least ten of them.
Sources said BCL leaders and activists led by Anindo Baroi, follower of JU BCL president's group, launched the attack on Moulana Bhashani Hall president Shakil Ahmed, follower of JU unit general secretary, and his followers in same hall.
Shakil Ahmed, BCL JU unit organising secretary Humayun Kabir and BCL executive member Rokonuzzaman, Arif, Shabuj and Saiful got critically injured as they were severely stabbed with lethal weapons.
The injured were sent to Enam Medical College and Hospital after
giving preliminary treatment at JU medical centre, BCL sources said.
A tense situation is prevailing on the campus after the incident.
