JU suspends 3 BCL activists: One held

JAHANGIRNAGAR UNIVERSITY, Jan 9 (UNB): Jahangirnagar University (JU) authorities on Monday suspended three activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) for one year for their alleged involvement in the killing of Jubayer Ahmed, a final year student of English department of the university.
The suspended BCL men are Khandaker Ashiqul Islam and Khan Mohammad Rois of Zoology department, and Rashedul Islam of Philosophy Department.
The authorities took the decision at an emergency meeting of the university Syndicate in the morning.
They also formed a six-member probe body headed by Pro vice chancellor Prof Farhad Hossain to investigate the incident, said JU Registrar Abu Baker Siddique.
Savar police arrested Ashique, one of the three suspended students, from Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall of the university on Monday morning.
Campus sources said a group of 14-15 activists of JU unit of BCL called Jubayer when he came out of the examination hall after attending his final exam at about 6:00 pm on Sunday.
Later, they took him to Natunkola Bhaban area and stabbed him indiscriminately, leaving him critically injured.
He was rushed to Enam Medical College Hospital at Savar from where he was shifted to the United Hospital as his condition deteriorated.
Sources said he died due to excessive bleeding.
Campus sources said Jubayer, son of Tofail Ahmed of Kuakata in Patuakhali, was an activist of BCL's university unit president Rashedul Islam Shafin-led group.
Meanwhile, Rapid Action Battalion members arrested Ashiqur Rahman, a final year student of Zoology Department, from Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall on Monday morning in connection with the killing of Jubayer.
Meanwhile, Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) on Monday expressed deep concern at the death of Jubayer Ahmed.
In a massage, ASK executive director Advocate Sultana Kamal said: "We' re observing that the atmosphere in universities is deteriorating due to aggressive attitude and violent behaviour of BCL, an associate body of the ruling Awami League."
She urged the government to take stern action against those involved in Jubayer killing and ensure education-friendly safe atmosphere on campuses.
