JU VC for session jam and violence free campus

Sunday, 13 September 2009

SAVAR, Sept 12 (BSS): Vice Chancellor (VC) of Jahangirnagar University (JU) Shariff Enamul Kabir has expressed his desire to eradicate session jam and eliminate violence from the campus by ensuring a congenial atmosphere to practice education and carrying out research work to achieve the target of 'Digital Bangladesh' as announced by the Prime Minister.
"The objective of the Digital Bangladesh would be materialised if we utilise the universities to produce quality human resources, who will play a pioneering role in turning the country into a digital one, free from illiteracy, corruption and hunger".
The JU VC said this in an exclusive interview with Bangladesh Sangbad Sagstha (BSS) Friday.
"My first and foremost initiative is to free the campus from the curse of session jam," Shariff said adding necessary measures have already been taken to eradicate session jam.
Incidents like unscheduled class boycott by students, delay in taking examinations and not publishing of results within the stipulated time were the major reasons behind the session jam, the VC said.
"We have already given directives to the departments concerned to follow the university rules and regulations for curbing session jam. Results must be published within sixty days after the examination. The departments, which will not be able to do this, they will be asked by the examination office and punitive action would be taken against them," the VC added.
Shariff said "Campus violence had crippled all activities of the university when I assumed the office on February 24 this year; I have tried my level best to bring the situation under control."
Grisly violence, which had made headlines of some of the national dailies in the recent past, had tarnished the image of the university, but the situation had been improved as punitive measures had been taken by the incumbent authorities, he said.
Peaceful academic atmosphere, the VC said had already returned as we had been able to stop the violent students' politics and drive away non-student political leaders from the campus.
"We have expelled 12 students from the university for different terms for their involvement in indiscipline and terrorist activities on the campus", Shariff told the news agency.
