JAHANGIRNAGAR UNIVERSITY, Mar 20: Vice Chancellor of Jahangirnagar University (JU) Professor Dr Shariff Enamul Kabir has vowed to eradicate extortion and eliminate violence from the campus. "My first and foremost stride is to materialise the target of 'Digital Bangladesh' as declared by the prime minister through ensuring congenial academic atmosphere in the campus and practicing general education and conducting research based activities," the VC told this correspondent in an interview here in the campus recently. In the meantime JU authorities have been able to restrain the session jam and ensured residential characteristics of the University, he added. Strict actions have taken to uproot the violent activities from the campus and around 50 students including political leaders; activists and cultural activists have been expelled for extortion and violence on the campus. As the authorities are trying wholeheartedly to eradicate extortion they have been getting frequent threats from unknown miscreants, the VC said adding. "In last year the campus was crippled with multifarious violence activities on the campus but we have controlled this through tough actions." Peaceful academic atmosphere, the VC said, has already been reinstated on the campus but some interest seekers want to thwart this. "We are taking steps to identify the persons, and security forces have been informed regarding the matter," he said.
