Wednesday, 10 December 2014
A Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal (JJD) leader died in a 'shootout' with police in Lakshmipur, report agencies, reports bdnews24.com.
Police have claimed that the deceased, identified as 'Rony', 24, was also a member of a criminal group, 'Jisan Bahini', of Sadar Upazila.
Rony's family, however, alleged that he was shot dead after being whisked away from Noakhali's Begumganj by some people who identified themselves as detective Branch (DB) police.
The district's Assistant Police Superintendent (Circle/Sadar) Md Nasim Mia contradicted family's version saying Rony died in the shootout between Jisan Bahini and police which took place at the Chandraganj Union's Latifur area around 10pm Monday night.
Upazila Jubo Dal president Mohammad Ali Kiran confirmed that Rony was a member of the party. Humayun Kabir, officer-in-charge of Chandraganj Police Station, said a team of police launched a drive in the area to arrest Solaiman Uddin Jisan, leader of the terrorist gang, around 11.00pm.
Sensing the presence of the police, Jisan and his associates opened fire on them, prompting the law enforcers to fire back, triggering a gunfight.
Jisan's associate Rony was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot while Jisan and other members of the gang managed to escape.
Police also recovered one pistol and 12 rounds of bullet from the spot.
Jisan is wanted in several cases, including for murder, extortion, robbery and kidnap, the SP added.
