KHULNA, Nov 28 (UNB): A procession of BNP came under attack by Jubo League, the youth organisation of ruling Awami League, leaving at least 100 people wounded at Shantidham in the city Sunday evening.
The witnesses said the procession to drum up support for Tuesday's countrywide hartal confronted Jubo League procession at Farazipara at 5pm. Jubo League, apparently preplanned, launched the attack on the opponents with sticks and brickbats to foil a much larger procession of BNP.
Riot geared police following both the processions resorted to lathi charge, used water cannons and fired tear gas shells to disperse the processions.
Angry BNP activists damaged three or four passing vehicles. The law enforcers picked up 15 BNP activists from the spot.
City BNP President Nazrul Islam who was in front of the procession and received minor injury said the attack was preplanned to frustrate their programme. He squarely accused the police of assisting the ruling party activists to launch the attack on them. Instead of directing the Jubo League procession to another way police deliberately brought the Jubo League men to confront the BNP procession.
Mr Islam claimed that more than 100 BNP activists were wounded in the sudden attack on their peaceful procession.
