Jubo League, BCL leaders get 3 yrs RI each

HABIGANJ, Aug 15 (UNB): A tribunal here Tuesday sentenced three leaders of Jubo League and Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) to three years rigorous imprisonment (RI) for ransacking a local newspaper office.
The convicts, district Jubo League president Ataur Rahman Selim, vice president Hasan Chowdhury Hemsim and district BCL vice president Mozammel Haque Talukder Shaheen were also fined Tk 3,000 each, in default, to suffer three months RI more.
The three convicts were tried in absentia.
According to the prosecution, the convicts attacked and set fire on the office of the daily Ajker Habiganj, owned by district BNP General Secretary and municipality chairman GK Gaus, on October 28, last year.
Mizanur Rahman, machine man of the daily on April 14 filed a case with the local police station against 13 leaders and activists of BCL and Jubo League.
After examining the records and 12 witnesses, Magistrate Jahirul Islam of the Speedy Trial Tribunal handed down the verdict acquitting 10 others.
