Judges urged to remove lethargy in judicial activities

Chief Justice (CJ) M Mozammel Hossain Sunday urged the judges to work with more devotion and responsibility removing lethargy and procrastination in judicial activities, reports BSS. "It is not enough for a judge to keep himself or herself free from corruption. The judges would have to keep all others in judiciary free from corruption," he said while speaking as the chief guest at the 22nd annual general meeting of Bangladesh Women Judges' Association in the city. Appellate Division Judge Nazmun Ara Sultana presided over the conference at the Judicial Administration Training Institute. Law Minister Barrister Shafique Ahmed addressed the function as the special guest. Justice Iman Ali, Justice Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed and Justice Shamsul Huda of the Appellate Division, Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice Abu Bakar Chowdhury of the High Court, and lower court judges Sharmin Nigar, Joyosri Samor Das and Nurunnahar Osmani also addressed, among others, the function. The chief justice said the female judges of the country are making significant contribution towards establishing justice with honesty, efficiency and devotion. Many of them are working in the High Court and the Supreme Court and keeping the evidence of their merit and efficiency, he added. The chief justice hoped that the female judges would play an effective role in quick disposal of cases to mitigate sufferings of the justice-seekers. He assured the judges of proper evaluation of their performances and said the judges would have to have honesty, moral excellence, fairness and steadfastness to establish justice and an independent judicial system in the country. Barrister Shafique said the government has introduced alternate dispute resolution (ADR) system to remove procrastination in the trial process and ensure quick justice to the people. The government has taken steps to resolve various problems in the judiciary. Infrastructure facilities and other logistic supports have been enhanced, the law minister said.
