Judiciary to lose head : BNP

Tuesday, 22 July 2014

BNP warned Monday that the judiciary would lose its head and effectiveness if parliament's power to impeach judges is restored, reports UNB.
"It'll be tantamount to beheading the judiciary if parliament's power to impeach judges is restored. It'll also contribute to spate of killing, enforced disappearances, rape and other heinous crimes," said senior BNP leader Goyeshwar Chandra Roy.
Mr Roy was addressing a discussion titled 'The Process of Impeachment of Judges and the Judiciary' at the Jatiya Press Club arranged by Democratic Movement.
Mr Roy, a BNP standing committee member, alleged that the government is conspiring to enable parliament to impeach Supreme Court (SC) judges in a bid to cling to power forever. "If it's done, the judges won't be able to work independently. People will lose their last resort of justice."
Earlier Thursday, chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Law Ministry Suranjit Sengupta said the restoration of the constitutional provision that enables parliament to impeach SC judges to ensure its sovereignty.
He came up with the remarks while addressing a press briefing after a committee meeting at the Jatiya Sangsad complex.
Opposing Mr Sengupta's assertion, Mr Roy also warned the government that it would turn into a death trap for Awami League (AL) when it will remain out of power.
