July Women's Day observed
FE REPORT | Wednesday, 16 July 2025
The first anniversary of the July Uprising was commemorated on Monday night as the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, Dhaka University (DU), and Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy jointly observed July Women's Day.
The main events were held at the Central Shaheed Minar and DU's Teacher-Student Centre (TSC), featuring screenings of audio-visual documentaries on the uprising, a drone show, a film exhibition, and tributes to the role of women in last year's protests.
Several popular singers and musical bands who were active during last year's protests performed live, paying tribute to the historic movement.
Notable attendees included Farida Akter, adviser to the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock; Adilur Rahman Khan, adviser to the Ministry of Housing and Public Works; Mostofa Sarwar Farooki, adviser to the Ministry of Cultural Affairs; Asif Mahmud, adviser to the Ministry of Youth and Sports; and DU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan.
Meanwhile, Dhaka University organised a late-night concert at the Raju Memorial Sculpture to honour the spontaneous participation of female students from various residential halls during the 14 July protests last year. Their mobilisation was in response to a controversial remark by ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who labelled quota demonstrators as "Razakar."
Female students joined the concert with special permission as the residential halls remained open for the occasion. Throughout the event, they chanted the iconic protest slogan, "Who are you, who am I? Razakar, Razakar!"
Adviser Asif Mahmud, addressing the crowd, joined in the slogan and said, "We stood here and chanted against the supremacy of autocracy during the uprising. That spirit must live on."
