JUST closed sine die as student killed in BCL attack

JESSORE: Jessore University of Science and Technology (JUST) has been declared closed for an indefinite period following the killing of a student in an attack allegedly by Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists on the university campus Monday, according to a news agency.
The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the university Syndicate Monday evening.
The male inmates of the residential halls have been asked to vacate their rooms within 9pm today while females ones by 10am Tuesday.
Besides, the Syndicate suspended the president and general secretary of the university unit of BCL in connection with the killing of Naimul Islam Riyad, 25, a 4th year student of Environmental Science Department of the university.
Campus sources said Tanvir, a 1st year student of Environmental Science Department beat Badal, a final year student of the same department, over a trifling matter on Sunday afternoon.
When Riyad wanted to know the matter from Tanvir, he got agitated and locked into an altercation with Riyad. Later, Tanvir informed the matter to his uncle and secretary of JUST unit BCL Shamim Hasan over phone on Monday morning.
Later, six BCL activists in three motorcycles intercepted Riyad in front of the main gate of the university around 2 pm and stabbed him indiscriminately, leaving him critically injured.
Jewel, another student of the university, was also injured as the assailants hit him in the head. Riyad died on the way to Jessore Medical College Hospital.
