JUST student among 3 killed in Jessore accident

JESSORE, Dec 12: A student of Jessore University of Science and Technology (JUST) and two others were killed on the spot as a truck hit a vehicle locally known as Nasiman at Churamankathi on the outskirts of Jessore town on Friday morning. Another student of the university was critically injured in the incident, said Dr Professor Abdus Sattar, Vice-Chancellor of JUST.
The deceased were identified as Abu Hanif (23), third year student of the Department of Physical Education of JUST hailing from Mirzapur, Tangail, Khadiza Begum (50), wife of Maulana Habibur Rahman of Shalua village under Chaugachha Upazila, and Anisur Rahman (28), son of Ruhul Amin of Shalua village.
Reshma Sharmin, assistant superintendent of police, Jessore, told the FE that three people, including a student of JUST, were killed on the spot and 11 others wounded in the accident on the outskirts of Jessore town at around 10am. Students of the university set fire to the truck while the driver fled the scene soon after the incident. Students also blocked the road, she added.
Talking to the FE Prof Dr Abdus Sattar, Vice Chancellor of JUST, said that critically wounded student Sharmin Sultana, second year honours student of Electrical Science and Engineering, was being shifted to Dhaka for better treatment. Her condition was stated to be critical.
Hospital sources said 9 people were undergoing treatment at the Jessore Medical College Hospital.
Police were deployed there to keep the situation under control.
Enamul Haque, officer-in-charge of Kotwali police station, said light vehicles started plying on the road as the blockade was withdrawn.
