Justice Shahabuddin laid to rest

He was a shining star of our judiciary, says CJ

People from all walks of life on Sunday bade farewell to former President and Chief Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed.
The former president was laid to rest at Banani graveyard in Dhaka around 12:15 pm, said Md Saifur Rahman, spokesperson for the Supreme Court.
Earlier, his body was kept at National Eidgah Maidan on the Supreme Court premises for about one hour from 10.00 am when SC judges, former judges, lawyers, law officers, political leaders and Justice Shahabuddin's family members paid their last respects to him.
After his second namaz-e-janaza at National Eidgah Maidan, Shahabuddin's body was taken to Banani graveyard for his burial.
Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique, former chief justices Syed Mahmud Hossain and Md Muzammel Hossain, judges of the Appellate and High Court Divisions of the SC, lawyers of the SC, acting attorney general SM Munir, deputy attorney generals, and government and SC officials concerned attended the janaza.
They paid tributes to Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed, placing wreaths on his coffin.
On behalf of President Md Abdul Hamid, his Assistant Military Secretary Brigadier General Raju Ahmed paid respects to the former president. Later, Supreme Court justices including Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique and other political and social organizations paid their last respects to former Chief Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed.
Before the second namaz-e-janaza, Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique said Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed was a shining star of the judiciary of Bangladesh.
"Shahabuddin Ahmed is one of the few judges of our golden age. Many of them have already passed away. Today we are saying goodbye to him."
Justice Siddique further said, "Shahabuddin Ahmed will remain alive among us through his verdicts delivered in the court. This nation especially our judiciary will remember him for his contributions to the eighth amendment case and other cases. Justice-seeking people will benefit from these verdicts even after 50 years or 100 years."
The Chief Justice has also suspended all judicial functions of the Appellate and High Court Divisions for Sunday in honour of Justice Shahabuddin.
Justice Shahabuddin passed away at Dhaka Combined Military Hospital (CMH) on Saturday at the age of 92. His first janaza was held at his ancestral village in Netrakona on Saturday.
