Jute cultivation up in Tangail

TANGAIL, Apr 16: Jute cultivation is increasing every year in Tangail district as the farmers get fairs price. Only few years ago cultivation of jute was very poor. But since two to three years jute cultivation is increasing in the district remarkably. Department of Agriculture extension (DAE) Tangail said the farmers of the district are happy over fair price of jute and are also getting handsome cash to cultivate the other corps. A jute cultivator named Habibur rahman of village Torabgonj under Sader Upazila said, he had cultivated jute last year in 50 decimals of land and in the current year he has cultivated 80 decimals. Farmers of the district also said, they have to depend on jute sales in the every season earlier to make up for there other corps production cost as they are getting cash in hand from jute. The DAE Tangail source said this season farmers of the District cultivated verity of jute, Local 4488 hectares of land with the production target of 38148 bells of jute, Tosha 10467 hectares of land with the production target of 114509 bells of jute, kenaf 4940 hectares of land with the production target of 43423 bells of jute, Mesta 332 hectares of land with the production target of 2918 bells of jute, Deputy Director (DD) DAE Tangail SM Afaz uddin told the FE that production of jute this season would be higher than previous years. The present jute price has raised hopes among the small and marginal farmers to cultivate on more lands, which were used for cultivation of other corps.
