BRAHMANBARIA, Oct 4 : Jute growers of the district are getting fair prices of their product this year.
Official sources said, farmers cultivated jute on 4956 hectares of land and produced about 45267 bales.
The farmers said that they are now getting Tk 1800 to Tk 2000 per maund of jute this season against the previous price of Tk300 to Tk400.
Deputy director of local Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Md Mosarof Hossain told the Financial Express the production of jute this season would be higher than that of the past years. The market price of jute has raised hopes among the small and marginal farmers to cultivate jute on more lands, which were used for cultivation of other crops earlier.
Abdullah, a jute cultivator of Bariura village under Sarail Upazila said, he cultivated jute on 30 decimals of land and his production cost was Tk 4050.
He got eight maunds of jute and sold it at Tk15000. He would start cultivation of jute from next season considering the high market price.
Farmers of the district said they have to depend on jute sales this season earlier to make up for their other crop production cost as they are getting fair price from jute.
Mosarof Hossain of the DAE, Brahmanbaria, said fair price of jute this season will encourage the growers to bring more lands under the jute cultivation next season.
