Sunday, 16 December 2007
KHULA, Dec 15 (UNB): Workers of six state-run jute mills here Saturday have been observing a token hunger strike demanding payment of their arrear dues and bonus ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
Sources said the workers gathered in front of Aleem Jute Mills at 9:00 am and started their programme, which continued until 5:00 pm Saturday.
The decision was taken at a meeting, held at the Crescent Jute Mill Friday.
The workers also threatened to block the Khulna-Jessore highway in the city from December 17 if the authorities fail to meet their demand by today (Sunday).
The workers and their family members alleged that the authorities are not clearing their arrear dues even after assuring them several times.
Jute and Textile Secretary Abdul Jalil and BJMC Chairman Ataharul Islam sat with the jute mill officials and employees last week to solve the problems of the mills. But the meeting ended without any settlement.
