Jute stalks worth Tk 50m cultivated in Meherpur

MEHERPUR, Oct 9: In Meherpur district jute has been cultivated in 2500 hectares of this year. From this the jute stalks of about 50 million taka have been produced.
This year jute has been cultivated in 2500 hectare lands in place of 1500 hectares. Though the jute market is not so well, people here produce jute every year. The jute stalk is used not only for fuel but also for fencing, vinery of betel and roofing.
To meet the demand for fuel the demand of jute stalk is also increasing as an alternative to trees. Besides jute, jute stalks are sold in 9-12 thousands taka per acre. This year, for the multiuse of jute stalk in Meherpur district, jute cultivation has been increasing from the target of 1500 hectare to 2500 hectare. Jute bags, table cloth, curtain etc. made of the golden fiber are also in demand in the market. But no one has come forward for this industry yet. If small industries are founded in Meherpur with the permission of government, this jute cultivation will be increase significantly.
