Kader Siddiqui may vie for Tangail-4 seat vacated by Latif

Kader Siddiqui’s Krishak Sramik Janata League (KSJL) has decided to put up candidate for the Tangail-4 constituency by-poll. The seat fell vacant after Kader Siddiqui’s elder brother and former Cabinet minister Abdul Latif Siddiqui resigned as member of the 10th Jatiya Sangsad (parliament). The younger Siddiqui, a decorated freedom fighter, has said that the decision was taken at an extended party meeting on Saturday. “But we haven’t decided on the candidate yet,” he added. Former posts and telecommunications minister Latif Siddiqui lost his Cabinet berth and was expelled from the Awami League last year for his anti-Hajj rant. The five-time MP from Tangail-4 resigned from the JS on September 1. Five days later, the Parliament Secretariat issued a gazette notification declaring the seat vacant. The law stipulates organising by-election within 90 days after a seat falls vacant but the Election Commission is yet to fix a date for balloting. At a press briefing on Saturday, KSJL Joint Secretary Iqbal Siddiqui said they had proposed Kader Siddiqui’s name at the meeting. “We’ll decide on the candidate at the party’s Parliament committee meeting after the election schedule is announced,” he said.
