Port Elizabeth, Dec 29 (Cricinfo): Jacques Kallis was South Africa's answer to a terrific West Indian new-ball spell as he, along with AB de Villiers, battled to put his team back in the hunt after they seemed out of the game.
Set a target of 389, they were rocked by four early blows which had them reeling at 45 for 4, before Kallis, unbeaten on 77 at the break, found an able ally in de Villiers and lifted South Africa to 138 for 4 at tea on the fourth day in Port Elizabeth.
After West Indies' last two batsmen had added 29 in the morning to lift the lead to 388, Daren Powell and Fidel Edwards began in superb fashion.
They raced in, consistently clocking around 140 kph, and tested the batsmen with pace, swing and bounce.
Tea South Africa 195 and 138 for 4 (Kallis 77*, de Villiers 31*) need 251 more runs to beat West Indies 408 and 175 (Ganga 45, Harris 4-35).
