Kamal quits as ICC president
FE Report | Thursday, 2 April 2015
International Cricket Council (ICC) President AHM Mustafa Kamal announced his resignation on Wednesday as he was 'unconstitutionally and unlawfully' barred from handing over the trophy to the champions of the just concluded ICC Cricket World Cup 2015.
Mr. Kamal, also the planning minister of the Awami League-led alliance government, made the announcement at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in the afternoon on his return from the biggest show of cricket. At a crowded press conference at the airport, he came up with the explanations behind his resignation from the global body and said he took the decision in protest against the unconstitutional and unlawful activities of the ICC Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. The ICC has accepted the resignation of its President Mustafa Kamal. In a media release issued hours after submission of Kamal's resignation letter on Wednesday, the ICC said he stepped down on personal grounds.
The ICC Board will now consider the vacant position of the ICC president at its meeting in Dubai on Apr 15 and 16.
Citing clause 3.3 of the ICC constitution, Kamal said only the president has the right to hand over the trophy to the winners of a match like the World Cup final and other global cricket competitions.
Kamal claimed he was not allowed to present the trophy to the winning captain of the World Cup final following his denial to apologise to the ICC over his criticism of the controversial umpiring in the second quarter-final match between India and Bangladesh.
In the match, India beat Bangladesh by 109 runs at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), the stadium also hosted the final in which Australia defeated New Zealand by 7 wickets and clinched the trophy for the fifth time.
Kamal had come close to questioning the integrity of the umpires by saying that the ICC should investigate the matter as to whether some decisions were 'deliberate or not'.
"I clearly told them that I would not withdraw my statement over the poor umpiring because it was the sentiment of 160 million people," he said adding that when the host of the post-final ceremony announced the name of the ICC chairman for presenting the trophy, more than 90,000 spectators at the MCG were shocked at the violation of the ICC constitution.
"I resign right at this moment. I am no longer ICC president. The main reason for my resignation is that I can't work with those who can act unconstitutionally and unlawfully," he told reporters.
