Kamal rules out army deployment

Monday, 19 January 2015

State Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said Sunday there is no need for deploying the army now to tackle the current spell of nationwide violence, report agencies.
He said the law enforcers like the Police, RAB (Rapid Action Battalion) and BGB (Border Guards Bangladesh) and Ansar under his ministry are enough to face the present confrontational situation triggered by the BNP-led 20-party alliance's indefinite countrywide transport blockade.
"If anyone thinks joint force includes army that is certainly not. The situation like calling out army has not yet been created and that question doesn't arise," the state minister said this while talking to journalists after attending a meeting of his ministry.
Mr Kamal was very critical of the current activities unleashed by the BNP-led 20-party alliance in the name of movement, terming those as sniper attacks and an evil attempt to create unrest and trigger panic across the country.
"There's nothing to be worried as the law enforcers have been functioning with conviction and sincerity to ensure the security of people on the streets, especially in the transport sector, and other public places," he said, adding the law enforcers are also alert round the clock to avert any situation.
"People, I think, will see a positive result in this connection within a few days," said Kamal.
Referring to a city incident, the state minister said the incidents of resistance by people against the political violence in some places have also been marked.
Failing to hold a rally on January 5, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia called an indefinite countrywide transport blockade.
Since then at least 20 people have died, several from burn injuries across the country.
The United Nations have also expressed concerns over the violence and called on all political parties to shun it.
