Kamaruzzaman appeal hearing next week

Thursday, 15 May 2014

The Appellate Division will start hearing the appeal of Jamaat-e-Islami leader Mohammad Kamaruzzaman in a war crimes case on May 18. He has been awarded a death sentence by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) in the city a year ago. A five-member bench headed by Chief Justice M Muzammel Hossain on Thursday fixed the date to start hearing Kamaruzzaman’s appeal. Attorney General Mahbubey Alam and Additional Attorney General MK Rahman were present at the court. Khandker Mahbub Hosssain stood for defence. The ICT on May 9 last year sentenced the Jamaat leader to death for wartime offences during Bangladesh’s independence struggle in 1971. Kamaruzzaman appealed against the verdict on June 6 last year. But the prosecution did not file any appeal as the accused was awarded maximum penalty, according to bdnews24.com.
