Wednesday, 17 September 2014

The verdict on war crimes convict Mohammad Kamaruzzaman's appeal against his death sentence may be announced any day now. An Appellate Division bench led by senior judge Justice SK Sinha kept the appeal verdict pending at the end of the hearing on Wednesday. The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on May 9 last year sentenced Kamaruzzaman to death for his ‘crimes against humanity’ during Bangladesh’s independence struggles in 1971. Kamaruzzaman appealed against the verdict on June 6 last year. Because he got death penalty, the State has not appealed in this case. Kamaruzzaman, also the assistant secretary general of Jamaat-e-Islami, was sentenced to death on charges of genocide at Sohagpur in Mymensingh and for murder of Golam Mostafa, according to bdnews24.com.
