A defence witness in Jamaat leader Mohammad Kamaruzzaman’s war crimes case has been arrested on charge of threatening women who had lost their husbands during Bangladesh’s independence struggles in 1971. Arshad Ali, a witness for Jamaat-e-Islami’s assistant secretary general Kamaruzzaman, was arrested on Sunday night, said Sherpur’s Additional Superintendent of Police Mohibul Islam Khan. Ali, 55, testified in favour of Kamaruzzaman in the tribunal, which awarded him capital punishment for crimes against humanity during the 1971 war. The Supreme Court upheld the tribunal verdict on an appeal by Kamaruzzaman. Pakistani military and their local accomplices had killed 120 males at Sohagpur village in Sherpur’s Nalitabarhi Upazila in 1971. Sohagpur has been dubbed ‘widows village’ since then. ASP Islam said on Sunday night that Ali was being interrogated at the Sherpur Police Station. Legal actions would be taken against him, he added, according to a news agency.
