Kamaruzzaman\\\'s execution may be delayed

Monday, 10 November 2014

The execution of war crimes death row convict Muhammad Kamaruzzaman may take more time as the Supreme Court has not issued an order to execute him yet, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam said while speaking with the reporters at his office on the High Court premises on Monday. ‘The execution of condemned war criminal Muhammad Kamaruzzaman might take time,’ the top law official said. ‘The Appellate Division has not issued an order to execute Kamaruzzaman yet. It appears that the apex court will deliver the full verdict before ordering for execution,’ he told the journalists. However, he did not specify as to how long it might take to execute Kamaruzzaman, the senior assistant secretary general of Jamaat-e-Islami whose death sentence was upheld by the 7-member Appellate Division on November 3. According to the Attorney General, the SC will send its full verdict to the International Crimes Tribunal-2. Then the tribunal will send Kamaruzzaman’s death warrant to the jail authorities if nothing otherwise is stated in the full verdict. It will then be upon the government,’ the attorney general added. Moreover, the question raised over the review of Appellate Division’s verdict is yet to be solved. Earlier, Mahbubey Alam said that Quader Mollah’s review petition was rejected by the SC, the full text of that rejection which could solve the issue yet to be published. However, the Dhaka Central Jail authorities have already been asked to prepare for Kamaruzzaman’s execution. There has been confusion as to whether he can appeal for a review against the apex court judgment, according to a news agency.
