Kamaruzzaman\\\'s time for seeking clemency expires Sunday: Law Minister

Law Minister Anisul Huq on Saturday said Jamaat-e-Islami leader and war crimes death row convict Muhammad Kamaruzzaman has 7 days for seeking President’s mercy and that time expires on Sunday. ‘Condemned war crime convict Kamaruzzaman will get 7 days to pray for presidential clemency which will be over tomorrow (Sunday),’ he told reporters after a seminar held at the Supreme Court auditorium in the city. Asked when the death sentence against Kamaruzzaman will be executed, he said, ‘I don’t know.’ The government will take preparations as per section 991 of the Jail Code that makes it obligatory to formally inform the convict of the death sentence and give him 7 days’ time to seek presidential clemency, he said. The convict has already been informed about the Supreme Court judgment, he said adding that it is a responsibility of the constitution to give him a chance to pray for the clemency and he has got the chance which ends tomorrow (Sunday),’ according to a news agency.
