Kasiani turmeric growers expecting bumper yield

GOPALGANJ, Aug 27: Turmeric growers of Moheshpur union under Kasiani upazila in the district are excepting a bumper production this season.
Sources said about 60 hectares of land have been brought under turmeric cultivation with the production target of 1,200 tonnes.
Around 1,800 cultivators of the upazila are growing the spice crop this year, official sources said.
Dipu Laskor of Baliadanga village under Moheshpur union in Kasiani upazila said he is cultivating turmeric, Shinduri origin, on six acres of land.
The grower said he expects around 650 maunds of production which market price is Tk 0.5 million.
Farmer Layek Sheikh said he is growing the item on one acre of land this year spending Tk 50,000.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Gopalganj, official sources said, a total of 140 hectares of land have been brought under turmeric cultivation with the production target of 2,800 tonnes.
Upazila Agriculture Officer, Kasiani, Rasamay Mondal said weather condition is favourable for farming of the item.
A good number of farmers are applying modern methods in growing the item in their lands, he added.
Samir Kumar Goshwami, deputy director (Agriculture), Gopalganj, said turmeric farming is profitable. It requires low cost but gives a good return.
A total of 3,500 farmers in the district are farming the crop on 140 hectares of land, the official added.
