Kawnia upazila Jamaat ameer among 24 held

At least 48 people, including ameer of Rangpur’s Kawnia opazila unit of Jamaat-e-Islami were arrested in Rangpur and northern district of Joypurhat on Thursday and Friday. Kawnia police station Officer-in-Charge Rezaul Karim said arrested Jamaat leader Abdus Salam was undergoing primary interrogation. He was arrested on Friday afternoon for his alleged involvement in subversive activities. Police picked him up from Rail Gate area of the upazila headquarters. In Joypurhat, 47 persons were arrested in several drives conducted in different parts of the district on Thursday. Police seized smuggled goods and narcotics worth of Tk1.1 million duiring the drives, according to a news agency.
