Kenya cautions Africa on WTO talks

Friday, 24 August 2007

NAIROBI, Aug 23 (Xinhua): The Kenyan government yesterday urged African countries to remain vigilant and ensure their positions are properly understood during the World Trade Organisation (WTO) talks on enhancing markets for agricultural produce.
Kenya's Permanent Secretary in Trade Ministry David Nalo said African nations would only gain from the global trade if they had supporting national policies and development goals, setting the development priorities for every nation.
Nalo said the rapid response teams would ensure that the national interests of every African country is taken into consideration and defended ahead of the start of a major negotiating phase for a new agricultural trade pact under the WTO.
"It is critical that you constitute a rapid response team with clear terms of reference to backstop the Geneva negotiations," Nalo said when he opened talks on expanding Africa's agricultural exports to the rest of the world in Nairobi.
The Kenyan officials have also proposed the formation of "rapid response teams" with clear points of reference to back up Geneva-based African envoys leading negotiations on expanding the exports markets for Africa's agricultural produce.
