Keshabpur UZ people become self-reliant cultivating beans

Cultivation of the crop along with fish farming

BENAPOLE, Nov 23: About one and a half thousand families of some villages in Keshabpur Upazila have become self-reliant by cultivating beans as a companion crop along with fish farming in Jashore.
Bean plants can be seen on both sides of the rural road from Keshabpur Bazar to Bharatbhayana. Small and big ponds can be seen behind the canopy of these plants.
The total population of Gourighona union of this upazila is about 3500. Among them, about 1500 farmers cultivate beans and fish.
In the villages of Bharatbhayana, Sannasagacha, Verchi, Burli of this union, most of the people cultivate beans as a companion crop along with fish farming in reservoirs (small and large enclosures).
Afsar Sardar, a farmer of Sannasgacha village, said that bean plants need a little care. Beans are very expensive in the market. I have planted 1300 bean plants next to the reservoir.
Yesterday I sold beans at the rate of Tk 83 per kg. I picked 13 kg of beans from the field that day. He also said that last week he sold beans at the rate of Tk 110 per kg.
Winter vegetables are slowly appearing in the market, and the prices are also decreasing. Last month, I sold beans at the rate of Tk 180-190 per kg. At that time, I picked maximum 32 kg of beans from pond side..
Lovelu Hossain, a resident of nearby village Bharatbhayana said, "I have 10 kathas land next to the fence. A month ago I sold beans at Tk 190 per kg. The price of beans is slowly decreasing.
Abdul Quddus of Sannasgacha village said prawns and white fish such as Rui-Katla are cultivated in the reservoir.
