RANGPUR, Sept 04: Despite having huge stock of coal, the Khalashpir coal mine under Pirganj upazilla in the district has remained abandoned for years.
According to sources, coal deposit at Khalashpir was discovered more than three decades ago. The geological survey team located the reserve of coal around 500 million (50 crore) metric tonnes between 130 metres and 200 metres beneath the surface, spreading over an area of 12 to 25 Sq Km.
