Former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has disclosed an additional Tk 4.0 million income for the tax assessment year of 2004-05, sources said.
Put into a sub-jail by the caretaker government on alleged corruption charges last month, Khaleda, who is also the chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), made the move September 27 through the jail authority, the sources added.
"She has taken the initiative after finding that income worth more than Tk 3.6 million was not shown in the tax return for the year 2004-05," said Ahmed Aazam Khan, a legal adviser of the two-time former Prime Minister.
The amount was realised by Khaleda as a special allowance on house maintenance. The sum was not included in her previous statement on possession of undisclosed money.
This should not be treated as undisclosed money either, said Aazam Khan, adding that the former prime minister found it suitable to include the amount as the undisclosed money in response to the revenue board's offer.
Sources said she has already submitted an account-pay cheque for nearly Tk 1.0 million through jail authority on Sonali Bank branch at Dhaka Cantonment against her new move to disclose the money.
The response of the national board of revenue (NBR) to the issue could not be known as the officials of circle-22 under the tax zone-2 have just communicated the matter to the NBR higher authority, sources added.
The latest move by the Khaleda Zia to disclose nearly Tk 4.0 million is in addition to Tk 0.37 million disclosed earlier by her for the same assessment year (2004-05).
Besides, Khaleda Zia disclosed Tk 13.0 million through payment of Tk 3.3 million for the previous five fiscals until 2006-07. She disclosed highest Tk 11.5 million in income for fiscal 2002-2003.
